You Can Wake Up With a Hangover From Eating Cheese, Pickles, or Oranges
12/19/2012

We're right in the middle of HEAVY DRINKING SEASON, which means you're probably expecting hangovers from going too hard on the booze. But you're NOT expecting hangovers from going too hard on the CHEDDAR. Apparently, scientists now believe you can get actual HANGOVERS from eating too much cheese, pickles, nuts, meats, or citrus fruit. Seriously. Eat too much of those, and wake up needing Advil and ENYA music.
The theory here is that some foods contain an organic chemical compound called tyramine, and when you have too much, it triggers a headache. Aged cheese, anything pickled, processed meats, and nuts all have very high levels of tyramine. So does alcohol. Other foods with slightly smaller amounts are citrus fruits, fresh bread, soy products, and caffeine.
