our Studies That Challenge Stereotypes About Men and Women

3/8/2013

If you believe the stereotypes about how men are more practical and women are more emotional, check this out.  Here are four things researchers have found that might change your mind.

#1.)  Women Are Not More Emotionally Wrapped Up in Relationships.  Researchers at Florida State found that between the ages of 18 and 23, men are much more likely to be emotionally affected by a break-up or a relationship issue.  It's partly because for most men, especially YOUNG men, relationships are their only source of intimacy.  Meaning, they're only open about their feelings with one person, their girlfriend.  And when there's drama in a relationship, men are less likely to get emotional support from their friends and family, because they just don't talk about it.  Also, men are more likely to go online to OBSESS over a relationship.  According to one study, 46% of men have stalked their girlfriend, their ex, or their GIRLFRIEND'S ex on Facebook or Twitter.  Compared to just 37% of women.

#2.)  Men Are Not Better at Investing Money.  A study of 35,000 households found that men basically use their GUT to play the stock market.  And women take a more rational approach.  The study showed that single men are less rational about it than MARRIED men are.  But married men are still less rational about their trades than single women.

#3.)  Women Are Not Better at Reading Emotions.  Researchers had people watch video clips, and asked them to identify what emotions the people in them were experiencing.  It turned out that PARENTS were better at reading emotions.  But there wasn't much of a difference between men and women.

#4.)  Men Aren't Necessarily More Aggressive.  It all depends on the circumstances.  For example, in one study researchers had people play a video game where they dropped bombs on stuff.  When men and women played in the same room TOGETHER, the women dropped significantly fewer bombs than the men did.  But when they played anonymously in different rooms, the women dropped MORE bombs than the men.  Which suggests that women are less aggressive because it's socially ACCEPTABLE to be less aggressive.
