Warning: Geeky Blog Ahead
So the news is reporting that Star Trek Director J.J. Abrams is set to direct Star Wars…
Jeff got excited! I was also filled with joy, but also with concern at the same time.
Being a Trekkie, I remember being skeptical when I heard that he was re-booting the franchise. I thought there was no way that he could take the story and give it a fresh start. And wouldn’t you know it, he won me over in just the opening sequence! It had the heart and feel of Star Trek, with a smart, captivating story line, and it got this gal 100% on board with his new timeline and direction! In addition to that film, he’s been behind a few other projects that I’ve given two thumbs up to, including Super 8, Lost, Cloverfield, etc. So it’s safe to say, I respect him as a director.
Now to the tough part – is the force strong enough with this one to also take on and successfully helm another beloved franchise set in space? The fan bases of the two have such tendency to collide! My roommate always likes to joke that she (being a Star Wars fanatic) and I (being a Star Trek fanatic) are not supposed to be friends! Thankfully I have enough of a love for Star Wars to bridge the gap, but can the same be said about Abrams? Will Star Wars fans accept his films? Will Star Trek fans cry blasphemy?
I recall reading about his experience watching Star Wars, and how it blew him away as a kid, so it sounds like he has strong roots in it. And now that I think about it, his direction of Star Trek did have a bit of Star Wars feel to it…
I believe J.J. can give Star Wars its due respect and satisfy everyone. His adoration for the original films should serve him well, and with his talents, here’s hoping he will deliver us films we all love (unlike the disappointing sequels!)
In conclusion, I give my blessing to J.J. Abrams to boldly direct a galaxy far, far away…
Live Long and Prosper.
