A Laid-Off Guy Bought a Lottery Ticket While Getting His Kids Corn Dogs, and Won a Million Dollars

1/17/2013

Last May, 34-year-old Riley Gunn of Merlin, Oregon got laid off from his job at a telecommunications company.  (Merlin is 240 miles south of Portland.)  Since then, obviously, money has been tight.  He had to move with his wife and three kids to a one-room cabin, with a wood stove for heat.

But last week he signed up for a computer course, and on his way home, he decided to splurge and buy corn dogs for his kids.  He also picked up a lottery ticket for himself.

Riley ended up winning the jackpot, for a MILLION dollars.  The family even had to borrow gas money from a friend in order to make the 200-mile drive to pick up their check on Tuesday.

The Gunn family got $670,000 after taxes, and donated 10% to their church.
