How Much Does It Cost to Be a Bridesmaid or a Groomsman?

2/5/2013

According to a new survey by a British market research company called YouGov, your friends are costing you more than a thousand dollars a year by getting married.  The average person spent $1,177 last year to attend weddings for friends and family members.  That includes travel and room costs, as well as the wedding gift.

Women spend about 19% more than men do, at about $1,340 a year.  And people over age 55 spend about $1,880 a year to go to weddings.  If you go to a wedding as a couple, the two of you will spend about $2,355 a year.  And if you're asked to be IN the wedding, then it's REALLY going to cost you.  The average bridesmaid spends $1,149 per wedding.  (The other dollar amounts were for an entire year's worth of weddings, not just one.)  The average groomsman spends about $980 per wedding.
