1. Even if you don’t win a medal at the Olympics, there’s a consolation prize for the athletes who finish fourth through eighth. They all get a certificate called an Olympic Diploma.
2. The first tailgate on record happened in 1861, when people traveled to watch the Battle of Bull Run in the Civil War and had picnics while they cheered on their side.
3. Ethiopia uses a different calendar than most of the rest of the world. It has 13 months and it’s currently 2016 there. (Anyone want to tell them the ride they’re in for?) Their 13th month is only five days long or six days during a leap year. And days start at 6:00 A.M. instead of midnight.
4. The world’s largest pistachio producers are: The state of California (40%), Iran and Turkey (both at 24%). That’s 88% of ALL the world’s pistachios.
5. Hawaii is made up of 137 islands: The eight big ones and 129 other small ones.
