Memorial Day Travel Could Break a Record That’s Stood for Two Decades

If you’re leaving town for Memorial Day next week, start planning your exit strategy.

Triple-A released its Memorial Day travel report, and they’re predicting a RECORD number of Americans will travel this year.  The current record has stood for two decades.

They expect 45.1 million people to travel this year, up about 3% from 2024.  The record is 44 million, set in 2005.  (They only count people traveling at least 50 miles from home.  If you’re only driving 49 miles, no one cares.)

39.4 million will drive this year, 3.6 million will fly, and just over 2 million will use some other form of transportation, like buses or trains.

They’re predicting an additional one million people on the roads compared to a year ago, up 3%.  So choose your departure time wisely.

It depends on where you’re going.  But in general, there tends to be less traffic early in the morning.  If you leave around noon, expect delays.
