Fake friends can be fun when you’re young and they’re “imaginary.” When you’re an adult, fake friends can be toxic. How do you know if one of your friends is FAKE? There’s a list online of the warning signs. Here are a few to look out for:
1. If you feel like your role “revolves around pitying the other person.”
2. When the friendship is on their terms. They only want to talk when it’s about them, convenient for them, or will benefit them in some way.
3. When friends keep secrets that affect your life, like knowing something questionable about someone you’re dating, and not telling you.
4. They never make time for you when they’re in a relationship.
5. Encounters with them leave you emotionally drained.
6. When you find yourself avoiding them or constantly complaining about them.
7. When they stop caring, and then explode when you point it out.
8. If they won’t accept you for who you are, and try to get you to change yourself.
9. When you realize the friend creates 99.9% of the drama you and them get into. And you’re cleaning up 99.9% of it.
10. No accountability. There’s no, “I messed up, I’m sorry,” just excuses and avoiding you.
(How did you discover YOU had a fake friend? Maybe you were on “Survivor”, and you and your “friend” Debbie agreed to vote Frank off the island, but at Tribal Council, you realized that Debbie and Frank had teamed up to vote YOU off the island.) (???)
