They’re covered in germs for the same reason as doorknobs. We just touch them a lot. And you probably don’t touch many door handles right after handling raw chicken.
A study in 2022 found it’s the second-filthiest spot in the average kitchen. Sinks are #1. Lots of handles tested positive for salmonella, E. coli, and even staph.
So how often should you be cleaning it? Several experts they talked to said daily is okay. But really, you should disinfect the handle of your fridge AND freezer every time you cook.
It only takes a second. The drawback is you’ll start feeling like a germaphobe real quick.
