For better or worse, Americans don’t agree on much, other than Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. But now, that might be getting controversial.
Brad Reese, the grandson of Reese’s inventor H.B. Reese, wrote a LinkedIn post a few days ago, accusing the company of changing his family’s classic formula, and not for the better.
He said the Hershey company is replacing milk chocolate with “compound coatings” and peanut butter with “peanut‑butter‑style crèmes,” across multiple Reese’s products. And he’s worried that the Reese’s legacy is “at risk.”
The Hershey Company responded, saying its Reese’s Cups are still “peanut butter and chocolate” at the core. “[They’re] made the same way they always have been, starting with roasting fresh peanuts to make our unique, one-of-a-kind peanut butter, that is then combined with milk chocolate.”
They didn’t elaborate about the past and current ingredients, but said that “recipe adjustments” have been made over time to accommodate “new shapes, sizes, and innovations.” So, if Brad’s right, there’s some gray area there.
