The 10 Most Common High School Experiences Include Crushes, Cliques, and Lying to Your Parents

Would you go back and do high school all over again if you could?  A poll for graduation season asked thousands of Americans, and most said YES.  55% would go back and do it again, but most said they’d do things a little differently, 5% aren’t sure, 40% said no way, once was enough.

The poll looked at the most common high school experiences we shared.  And #1 makes sense, but you might not guess it.

The poll asked about 50 different high school experiences to see how common they are, or were.  Here are the Top 10:

1.  Did you have a CRUSH on someone in high school?  87% of us did.

2.  Had a specific friend group or clique?  83%

3.  Took a class you loved?  79%

4.  Took a class you hated?  Also 79%

5.  Went to at least one high school football game?  68%. 63% also went to at least one high school dance.

6.  Kissed someone?  68%

7.  Lied to your parents?  67%

8.  Took the S.A.T. or A.C.T.?  66%

9.  Went on a date?  65%

10.  Had a boyfriend or girlfriend?  64%.  (Only 36% had sex in high school.)

 

People were asked to rate their overall high school experience, and most of us DIDN’T actually hate it.  49% loved or liked high school, 28% felt ‘meh’ about it, 12% said “dislike”, and 8% hated the whole experience.

Here are a few more stats broken out into different categories . . .

Rules and Rebellion:  55% had a curfew, 31% snuck out of the house, 52% got grounded, 50% skipped school, 43% got sent to the principal’s office, 37% got detention, and 35% got into a fight.

Friendship:  62% made a close friend they still talk to, 53% went to at least one house party, and 49% hung out with friends at the mall.

Academics:  47% made honor roll, 54% filled out a college application, 32% cheated on their homework or on a test, and 60% failed a test.)

Extracurriculars and work:  62% had a job, 51% were part of a club at school, 48% volunteered at least once, 39% played on a sports team, 31% were in band or choir, and 30% were in a school play.

Drugs and alcohol:  49% drank, 37% smoked at least one cigarette, and 28% tried pot.

Driving:  64% got their driver’s license in high school, but that one really depends on how old you are:  82% of Boomers did, compared to just 42% of people under 30.
