Electric cars might be easier on the planet, but for some passengers, they’re harder on the stomach.
Studies have shown people often feel more motion sickness in EVs than in gas cars, and there’s some science behind it. Without the rumble of an engine or familiar vibrations, your brain gets fewer clues about when the car is about to speed up or slow down.
And electric cars also have a feature called regenerative braking, which creates a slower deceleration. Add all those things together, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a possible puke.
Researchers say it’s all about a “neural mismatch”, which basically means that your eyes, inner ear, and body aren’t on the same page.
But don’t expect it to be this way forever. Scientists are exploring fixes, like adding subtle vibrations, lighting, or visual cues to help your brain anticipate what the car is about to do.
Until then, the driver’s seat might be the safest spot for your stomach.
