A Half-Hearted Pitch for Why the Middle Seat Is the Best Seat on Airplanes

A travel writer for the site “View from the Wing” did an article on why the middle seat on planes might be the BEST seat you can pick.

His whole argument is a little half-hearted, like even HE doesn’t believe it.  But here are the four reasons he says to consider it the next time you fly.

1.  You get both armrests.  We’ve heard that argument before.  The only problem is not everyone agrees.  So there’s a good chance the people you’re sitting between don’t know that’s the “rule.”

2.  Airlines sometimes offer rewards for middle seat passengers.  Virgin Australia once gave out prizes, and Spirit handed out bonus miles.  But it’s not a common thing.  The real perk is you don’t have to pay EXTRA for a middle seat.

3.  It’s the best of both worlds.  You can still kind of see out the window, you only have to climb over one person to use the bathroom, and there’s only one person who might have to ask YOU to move.

4.  You’re more likely to make a friend.  (???)  If you’re looking to socialize, you’ve got TWO people to annoy.  But if you’re that person, it’s not much harder to talk across the aisle from an aisle seat.  So, it’s not really a huge benefit, unless you’re also a CLOSE-talker.
