New in Theaters: “The Strangers: Chapter 2” and “Blue Moon”

1.  “The Strangers: Chapter 2”  (R)  Trailer

The second movie in the new horror trilogy, all of which were shot at the same time then cut into three chapters.

It stars Madelaine Petsch as Maya, who it is revealed has survived the attack from the first film.  But as she tries to leave town, she becomes paranoid that everyone she sees could’ve been one of the masked killers who tried to kill her.

 

 

2.  “Blue Moon”  (R)  Trailer  (Opened Wednesday)

Ethan Hawke plays Lorenz Hart,  Richard Rodgers’ former songwriting partner, who bitterly grapples with alcoholism and depression on the 1943 opening night of “Oklahoma!”, after realizing their partnership was ending now that Rodgers had teamed up with a guy named Oscar Hammerstein.

Before they split up, Rodgers & Hart wrote such 1930s classics as “Blue Moon”, “The Lady Is a Tramp”, and “My Funny Valentine”.  Rodgers & Hammerstein went on to earn 34 Tony Awards, 15 Oscars, two Pulitzers, and two Grammys.

Margaret Qualley plays the woman he falls for, Bobby Cannavale is the bartender trying not to serve Hart any more booze, and Andrew Scott is Richard Rodgers.

 

 

3.  “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie”  (G)  Trailer

In this movie version of the Netflix kids TV series, Gabby goes on a road trip with her grandmother (Gloria Estefan) and has an adventure trying to save her dollhouse and her cats from an eccentric cat lady played by Kristen Wiig.

“One Battle After Another” starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a revolutionary who comes out of hiding and reunites with Benicio Del Toro to help him save his daughter from a vengeful group of cops led by Sean Penn.  (Trailer)

 

 

“Dead of Winter” starring Emma Thompson as a widow who goes up north to spread her husband’s ashes and stumbles across a kidnapping victim who she becomes determined to rescue despite a brutal Minnesota blizzard.  (Trailer)

 

 

“Eleanor the Great” starring June Squibb as a 94-year-old Holocaust survivor who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a 19-year-old student who wants to write an article about her.  It’s directed by Scarlett Johansson.
