Yesterday, we talked about the long-lasting power of the word “cool“, and how it’s been used for over 100 years. But what about slang words that never made it past a year or so?
A post is going viral of a bunch of teen slang words from 1954. It’s from a newspaper clipping from the “Northwest News”, which was in Bethany, Oklahoma.
Here are some terms that fizzled out long ago:
1. “Cool Jonah” was slang for a well-dressed kid.
2. “George” meant money.
3. “Spooning your scarf” meant eating your food.
4. “Dubble Bubble” meant a cute girl.
5. “Bad Dad from Baghdad” was a guy who thinks he’s tough.
6. A “flookie” is a jerk, if you’re at the movies, it’s called a “hecklethon”, and a “flip lip” is a person who makes wisecracks.
And the only slang on this list that some people still use today, is the word “square”, which is a person you don’t like.
(You might think you’re a Cool Jonah, but you’re actually a Bad Dad from Baghdad. Now go spoon your scarf with a Dubble Bubble. You can check out some more 1954 slang here.)
